The Collaboration Core within the College of Engineering has an outstanding opportunity for a Director of the Washington Nanofabrication Facility.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The individual in this position is responsible for directing WNF’s day-to-day operations, with primary responsibilities in the areas of strategic planning, business development, operations management, and technical staff supervision. The Director sets organizational goals, matches staff activities against the strategic objectives for the facilities, and monitors progress in these areas. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are size and diversity of user base, lab activity and revenue, equipment uptime and reliability, and workforce development of competent process engineers and fabrication technicians.
Business Development & Strategic Planning:
• Maintain a sustainable business plan aligned with facility’s mission and funding streams, while being adaptable to emerging opportunities and leveraging multifaceted resources to provide strategic expertise while maintaining a broad capability set.
• Set and meet progressive fundraising targets by broadening user base, diversifying revenue streams, applying for grants and taking advantage of state and federal funding opportunities, offering industry training, growing productivity, and other innovative approaches.
• Execute targeted communication with users, directing internal and external marketing campaigns with specific measurable objectives driven by the business plan.
• Develop, support, and expand capabilities of the facility; manage major tool acquisitions, coordinated closely with other facility directors (WCET, MAF, PNNL, etc.) to optimize user experience and offerings without duplication of efforts; network with regional, national, and international experts and internal/external user base.
• Explore new user groups; develop relationships with potential users; assist in their on-boarding at the facility.
• Identify new funding opportunities; write equipment grants and participate on proposal teams; present outcomes and research.
• Set strategic goals; track and report progress toward objectives to NanoES Director and Advisory Board on a regular basis.
Operations Management:
• Manage finances and accounting operations for the cost center: Maintain a rate plan for instrumentation, technical support, and other services. Partner with fiscal staff to ensure an accounting operation that is compliant with UW policies, program income, and other reporting requirements and provides excellent customer service.
• Lead development of standard operating procedures and protocols, ensure they are documented, kept up to date, and followed, and provide corrective guidance and measured responses to violations of procedures and protocols.
• Lead development of protocol and procedures for on-boarding and training users in project planning, sample preparation, execution of analysis, interpretation of results to characterize, document, and report various types of samples, process recipes, and process flows within the user facility.
• Ensure tools are managed and staffed properly: oversee preventative maintenance and repairs, system documentation, training, user support, implementation of web-CORAL software, and contract vendor activities.
• Maintain laboratory management protocols and safety program; ensure compliance with EH&S, university, and local, state, and federal regulations and other permitting authorities’ lab requirements.
• Manage space assignments and serve as primary facilities contact; work with maintenance contacts to arrange maintenance and repairs and resolve facilities issues; maintain building access categories and arrange card-based access for users and visitors.
Staff Management:
• Manage performance of a flexible team of ~10 technical and administrative staff with direct and indirect reporting and 15-40 undergraduate student lab assistants and interns. Manage hiring process when vacancies arise.
• Advise staff on objectives, projects, prioritization, and technical challenges through regular meetings.
• Provide leadership that supports teamwork and a motivated workforce.
• Forecast staffing needs and advise the NanoES Director on short-term and long-term staffing arrangements.
Other Duties:
• Plan, schedule, conduct, or coordinate detailed phases of the work for a major project (e.g., renovation and expansion projects, instrumentation relocation).
• Prepare presentations and papers; attend technical meetings, conferences and trade shows; participate in external seminars, workshops, professional societies and committees.
• Represent WNF at campus activities, outreach events, seminars, networking events, tours, as well as on-line.
• Contribute or oversee development of content and materials for grant and gift reports.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
• Supervise ~10 technical and administrative staff with direct and indirect reporting and 15-40 undergraduate student lab assistants and interns
REQUIREMENTS:
• Masters Degree in chemistry, engineering, materials science, physics, or related area
• Three or more years of technical, engineering, or related experience after
• Experience working with micro and nanofabrication equipment, characterization, and process development.
• Experience leading technical teams, preferably in a multi-user fabrication facility.
• Experience effectively supervising and managing staff.
• Management style that emphasizes teamwork, transparency, communication, flexibility, trust and patience.
• Financial management, business development, and policy development experience.
• Strong communication skills: ability to write policy and contribute to technical and educational resources; prepare and present materials, lectures, and presentations to groups and individuals; and train and interact with individuals across wide range of technical and non-technical backgrounds.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE
• Doctoral Degree in chemistry, engineering, materials science, physics, or related area
• Professional network of contacts in semiconductor and/or advanced manufacturing community (national/academic labs, small and large corporations and startups) and knowledge of industrial/academic customer base.
• Prior role charting technology needs and mobilizing resources.
• Track record of obtaining grants, external funding, and/or meeting fundraising targets.
