CITRUS COUNTY MOSQUITO CONTROL DISTRICT
Mosquito Control Technician 1

 

MAJOR FUNCTION
The purpose of this class is to control the mosquito populations and minimize mosquito-borne diseases using known methods of integrated pest control management in compliance with federal and state regulations. Employees in this class are responsible for identifying mosquito habitats in assigned area, mapping and monitoring them, and applying pesticides as needed. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed; develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES
Employees in this class perform duties of average difficulty requiring some initiative and independent judgment under general supervision.

MAJOR DUTIES

Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform some or all of the activities described below.
• Monitors and inspects mosquito breeding areas; determine landing rates for adult mosquitoes.
• Reports large or unusual mosquito breeding areas requiring special larvicide applications from helicopters or large spray trucks.
• Identifies, maps and records conditions of mosquito habitats; maintains path/trails to sites.
• Applies pesticides to mosquito populations as needed.
• Operates an ATV when necessary for difficult site access and pesticide application.
• Operates vehicle and mounted spray equipment and applies larvicide and adulticide preparations to mosquito
breeding areas.
• Prepares reports related to pesticide, sites and maintenance.
• Assists with public pest control concerns.
• Notifies owners or occupants of survey findings.
• Stays abreast of pest control techniques including attending short courses.
• Maintains equipment including vehicles, pesticide equipment, and/or computers.
• Assists with inventory control of chemicals and equipment.
• Applies herbicide to aquatic plants known to harbor mosquitoes.
• Performs other related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
• Working knowledge of Units of Measurement (i.e. liquids, solids and acreage).
• Ability to work effectively with others.
• Ability to prepare written activity reports.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to read maps.
• Good working knowledge of computers and data entry.
• Ability to lift 50 pounds.
• Ability to navigate uneven terrain on foot.

RECOMMENDED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; and
• Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license.
• Possession of current Florida Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services Public Health Certification required within six months. Employees lacking this certification when hired will start 5% below the starting pay rate.
